Attack Win In Saginaw !

Gemel Smith leads his Attack to victory in Saginaw !

Our Attack were guests of the Saginaw Spirit Friday night.  The 4th and final regular season game between the two OHL Western Conference members.  The Spirit won 2 of the first 3.

Final score Owen Sound 4 – Saginaw 3.  Final shots on net Spirit 39 – Attack 36.  Owen Sound went  1 for 5 on the PP.  Saginaw 1 for 7.

Jordan Binnington got the start in the Attack net.  Jordan has now started all four games versus the Spirit this regular season.  Jake Peterson for Saginaw.

Our Captain Mike Halmo opened the scoring firing his 40th of the season at 9:46 of the first.  Gemel Smith had done all the work to create the goal.  Brayden Rose assisted.  1-1 after one period of play with the Attack outshooting the Spirit 15-14.

Attack Head Coach Greg Ireland would not have been happy with his hockey club making it a parade to the penalty box in period two.  Down 3 on 5 twice.  Five consecutive, unanswered minors.

With a 2 man advantage, a shot/pass by Vincent Trocheck deflected off the skate of Attack defender Keevin Cutting to make it a 1-1 game at 7:15.

Our Attack worked off a second two man disadvantage mid-way in the period.  Working another penalty kill, Cameron Brace jumped on the ice on a line change and with Mike Halmo reading the play, Cameron was sent in alone and went backhand for his 28th of the season and the 2-1 Attack lead at 16:47.

Gemel Smith "brought it" tonight.  On a PP, Gemel put a shot on net that Peterson stopped, but the rebound was snapped up by Attack underage power right winger Zack Nastasiuk for his 10th of the season.

Brandon Saad had hit a couple of posts earlier in the game.  At 9:39 he fired his 31st on a PP.  2-2.

The Attack won the game with another goal by “Nasty”.  Zack Nastasiuk pumped his 11th after taking a backhand  pass from his Captain at 14:39.  Eleven goals in your underage season?  Not many do that.

Brandon Saad made things close with his 2nd of the game and 32rd of the season at 19:04.

The 3 Stars of the Game were:
1st Star – Gemel Smith with 3 assists.
2nd Star – Brandon Saad
3rd Star –  Mike Halmo

Our defending League Champions  - when 5 games were left on their schedule – are on the road for four.  ????  This game in Saginaw, then Saturday it is what will most likely be a very important game for both teams in Sarnia.  Who will finish 4th or 5th or worse?  Game time is 7:00 p.m.  On their way home Sunday, the Attack will cross over to Detroit to play the Plymouth Whalers in a 2:00 p.m. matinee.

Our final road game of the season is in Guelph Friday March 16th.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.
