Before 3234 fans on the night that our Owen Sound franchise honoured one of their all-time best players – raising a banner for Kirk Maltby – the Oshawa Generals and our Attack put on a pretty good show. On hand for the pre-game ceremony was Kirk Maltby, along with his wife Wendy and children Ella, Landon and Leighton. Also present were Kirk's parent's Fred and Sue, Kirk's mother in law Madeline and former Billet Parents Wilmer and Mable Beckett. Former Owen Sound Platers General Manager Ray McKelvie and Attack President Dr. Robert Severs both said words on behalf of the organization, while Kirk's eldest daughter Ella assisted in raising her father's banner. Declining comment on the ice during the ceremony due to the overwhelming reaction, Kirk wishes to say, "thank you to all of the wonderful Owen Sound fans who supported me during my time in Owen Sound and throughout my NHL career. The support shown for me and my family on Saturday night was second to none. A special thanks to Wilmer and Mable Beckett who will always be considered my 'second parents'. Once again, thank you to the city and fans of Owen Sound."
The Generals took the lead when JP Labardo backhanded his 8th of the season at 10:56 just as a 2 man advantage was ending. Lucas Lessio and Nick Quinn assisted on the goal. 1-0 after one period of play.
Christian Thomas – the son of former NHL scoring star, Steve Thomas – fired a low shot what appeared to be 5-hole on Attack netminder Jordan Binnington just 45 seconds into the second. The goal was Christian’s 45th of the season. Labardo and Scott Valentine assisted.
With the Generals taking a delay of game minor, Attack defenceman Matt Petgrave wired his 8th of the season in off the crossbar behind Oshawa netminder Peter Di Salvo, after receiving a pass from Robby Mignardi. Jarrod Maidens also assisted on the goal coming at 6:20. Matt played a ton of minutes. Not much choice for Head Coach Mark Reeds. Our Attack were missing three of their regular defenceman and lost Jesse Blacker early in the first period. Jesse would return for period three.
2-1 after two periods of play. Both goaltenders having marvelous games. The Attack outshot the Generals 11-7 in the first period. The Generals were leading 20-17 after two.
The father of Attack forward Roman Berdnikov is visiting from Moscow. Roman impressed him blasting a shot on the Oshawa net that Garrett Wilson tipped in for his 37th of the season at 4:35 of the third period. Andrew Fritsch assisted.
Jordan Binnington was making save after save while playing shorthanded when Alan Berger flipped a nice backhand for his 27th of the season and a 3-2 Oshawa lead at 13:51. Thomas and Team Canada defenceman Calvin de Haan assisted.
The Generals then took back to back minor penalties giving our Attack a two man advantage for 45 seconds. It took 28 seconds for Roman Berdnikov to wire another shot on net that was deflected by Mike Halmo this time and the game was tied at 3. Matt Petgrave also assisted on the goal coming at 18:58. With 20 seconds left in regulation time, the Generals had the puck behind Jordan Binnington, but Jesse Blacker was able to scoop it away as it rolled across the goal line.
The four-on-four play of the five minute sudden death overtime period was great to witness. Both goaltenders making big saves. A shootout was imminent.
In the shootout, Robby Mignardi wired a wrist shot high over the catching glove of Di Salvo, but both Christian Thomas and Andy Andreoff were able to beat Jordan stick side.
Final score Oshawa 4 – Owen Sound 3 SO. Final shots on net were 35 - 31 Attack. The Attack were 3 for 10 on the power play. The Generals 2 for 6.
The Dickies Clothing Hardest Working Player of the Game was Keevin Cutting.
The Kelsey’s Neighbourhood Bar and Grill Attacker of the Game was Matt Petgrave.
The 3 Stars of the Game were:
1st Star – Christian Thomas – with his 45th goal of the season.
2nd Star – Matt Petgrave
3rd Star – Garrett Wilson
