ATTACK RUN THE BULLS

Game Report
by Dave Marshall

Wednesday night's game was advertised as the "Running of the Bulls" night and run the Belleville Bulls out of our winter storm attacked town our Attack did, but not till 18:43 of the third period was this game decided.

With some players not available for the game, youngster Matthew Kang was called up from his St. Michael's Buzzers Junior A hockey club to fill in one of the holes on our Attack front end. This kid - Matthew turned 16 November 9th - can play and play he did tonight. A goal, 2 assists and a bloody nose earned Matthew 2nd Star honours and the fan's choice Kelsey's Attacker of the Game honours. Even with Matthew in the line-up, Attack Head Coach Mike Stothers could only dress 16 of an allowed 18 skaters.

Our Referree for the game was Joe Park. His linesmen John McCutcheon and Jonathan Rose.

Scratched from the Owen Sound line-up card were Wes Cunningham, Bob Sanguinetti, Mike Angelidis and Robin Big Snake plus defenceman Justin Dacosta had been traded to Mississauga. From the Belleville line-up, Lubomir Stach, Ryan Roraback and former Attack winger David Edgeworth.

Starting in net for the Attack was Dan LaCosta. For Belleville, Eric Tobia.

Referree Park called only 6 minor penalties all game, but one of those was a soft looking cross-checking penalty on Attack rookie winger Igor Gongalsky at 3:09 of the first. Belleville's Cody Thornton - this boy had a good game - beat Dan LaCosta with a wrist shot from the right point that by Dan's actions, was either deflected or he couldn't see. Cody's 11th of the season at 3:57 from Evan Brophy and former Attack right winger Andrew Maksym.

Owen Sound tied the game at 13:26. Matthew Kang controlled the puck down low in Belleville's left corner till he had a chance to have a look and find Stefan Ruzicka out in the high slot. Rosie drove his 15th goal of the season high stick side on Tobia.

Andrew Maksym scored nearly the same goal at the other end at 14:06. Marc Rancourt set up Mak with a beauty pass that Andrew pounded past Dan LaCosta. No chance for Dan. Andrew's 11th of the season. Tops on the Belleville team. Jeff Leavitt was also given an assist.

To round out the 1st period scoring, Attack center Kevin Baker carried the puck across the Belleville blueline before handing off a backhand pass to Stefan Ruzicka. Stefan let go with one of his "big league" shots that Tobia couldn't contain. Matthew Kang snuck in behind Rosie and snapped the puck behind Tobia for his 1st Ontario Hockey League goal at 16:46.

The Attack outshot the Bulls 13-6 in the first period, but the score was tied at 2.

The Attack had a bit of a scare at 2:50 of the 2nd period. Bulls right winger Ryan Berard let go with a screamer of a slap shot just before he was going to leave the ice for the Belleville bench that caught Dan LaCosta on the left shoulder. Big league shot, but Dan did not show any signs of feeling it. We fans at that end sure did.

This was not one of the better played OHL games that fans will see in Owen Sound this season. In fact at times, one would think that it is a "no contact" game. I would imagine that would be just fine with the visiting Bulls. At the 8:00 mark they go ahead again. An Attack missed assignment in their own end allowed Matt Kelly to walk out of the corner to Dan LaCosta's right, move across the front of the net and with Dan crawling on the ice chasing Matt, Matt slide a very simple backhand into the Attack net. Evan Brophy and Geoff Killing were awarded assists. 3-2 Belleville.

There have been a number of Attack players that have come to play each and every game this season. One is our star right winger, Bobby Ryan. With his 14th goal of the season, our top scorer gave us another of his "just shake your head in disbelief" moves to tie the game at three. At 11:33 Bobby was holding off a Bellevill
