ATTACK WIN SEASON HOME OPENER !

Owen Sound 4 - Sault Ste. Marie 3

9/23/2006

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds made their only regular season visit to Owen Sound Saturday night and gave our Attack all they wanted. Two Attack goals in the last 35 seconds of the first period were the turning point this game. Owen Sound led 3-1 after the first period of play, 4-2 after two periods and hung on a bit late in the third to take the two points and even their early season record at one win and one loss.

The Hounds defeated the Kitchener Rangers in Kitchener Friday night. There are those that think that the Soo, our Attack and the Saginaw Spirit will be the cream of the OHL Western Conference this season. Too bad that the Attack and Greyhounds don't hookup more than the home and home schedule. These two look like they could get something going.

Darren Price and Joel Washkurak were our Referee's. Their linesmen were Kevin Hastings and T. J. Luxmore. Scratched from the Soo lineup card were Jacob Muzzin, Trevor Soloman, Chris MacKinnon and Grant McGee. For our Attack, Pat Campbell, Trevor Smith, Bobby Ryan and Michael Farrell. Starting goaltenders were Kyle Gajewski for the Greyhounds and Russ Brownell for our Attack.

Owen Sound got on the scoreboard first when Marek Bartanus scooped up a Bob Sanguinetti rebound, put a move left to right on Gajewski and "wrapped" the puck behind Kyle at 8:14. Josh Bailey had won the draw left side back to Sanguinetti to earn the extra assist.

Wayne Simmonds played the right wing with Trevor Lewis at center and Anton Hedman on the left side. Good looking group. Wayne and Anton had some good pressure on the Greyhounds defenders till a turnover. Down the right wall the Hounds went till David Kuchejda fired the puck past Russ Brownell with assists going to former Attack first round draft pick Payton Liske and Matt Lyall at 9:56.

Our Attack should have an awesome first line powerplay unit this season. With the Greyhounds short two men, Attack Head Coach Mike Stothers had the Trevor Lewis line on the ice with Bob Sanguinetti and Theo Peckham looking after the backend. This group will give defenders nightmares for sure. Lewis, Hedman and Simmonds are all newcomers to the Attack. Wait till they get to know each other. The red light will burn !

They score twice in the dying minute of the first period. Goals that will ultimately determine the outcome of this game. At 19:25 Anton popped his goal into what was basically an empty Greyhound net after he had moved the puck from the right corner to Trevor in the slot. Trevor made a fake and slid it to Wayne left side, who in turn fed back cross ice to the waiting Hedman.

32 seconds later, the same bunch made it 3-1 Owen Sound. This time Theo put the puck down low right side to Anton. Anton moved to the Soo net before backhanding a pass to a waiting Trevor Lewis in the slot. The one-timer was in before the Hounds could react.

3-1 Owen Sound after one period of play with the Attack outshooting the Soo 15-8.

So ! 3-1 Attack after one period of play with the Attack scoring twice late. This game has all the signs of "whoever scores next will win". Now you throw in a couple of big and of course timely saves by Attack netminder Russ Brownell and it gets even better as Scott Tregunna slaps a powerplay goal from the right point to give his team a 4-1 lead at 12:56. Rookie defenceman David Kolomatis assisted. This will turn out to be the game winner.

The Hounds are coached by a former NHL great in Craig Hartsburg. His teams do not give up. Names like Good, Quesnele, Cuthburt, Thornton, Lyall - can this kid skate - and MacLean are a few names that come to mind. At 19:03 Dustin Jeffery skated from the right corner and somehow found a way to put the puck by Russ Brownell's right arm to make it a 4-2 game. Liske and Brett Halstead assisted. A worrisome late in the period goal.
