![]() The - early season - undefeated Ontario Hockey League West Division Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds made their only 2007-2008 regular season visit to Owen Sound Saturday night. This was the end of a three game sweep through the south to start their season this week. Winning 7-5 in Saginaw and 4-1 in Guelph, the Hounds would be another early test for our young Attack who opened their season in Kitchener last night with the Rangers coming out on top 7-2. Our Attack will do much the same as the Greyhounds next weekend when they play in Sarnia Friday night, Saginaw Saturday and visit the Soo Sunday. Get that trip to the Soo over as early as possible to make sure that winter weather does not cause problems. With the Greyhound wins, young (1990) James Livingston was the OHL leading scorer with 2 goals and 4 assists entering this game in Owen Sound. James had 9 penalty minutes to go with his point total which tells a reader that this boy comes to play. James would end up a –1 for the night. Attack Head Coach Mark Reeds gave overage goaltender David Davenport the start in net. Soo Head Coach Craig Hartsburg went with his overager, Kyle Gajewski. There was no scoring in period one, but with the Attack enjoying three consecutive power plays, Gajewski had to keep his team in the game with a couple of dandy saves on the five shots he faced. David Davenport too was called on to look after his end even though the Greyhounds only put four shots on net. Sault Ste. Marie would score four times before the game was over. None that were just clean shots that beat Davenport. Goal one – a PP marker - came at 2:49 of the second after a deflected shot by defenceman Josh Godfrey missed the net but bounced off the boards right to a waiting Chris MacKinnon. 1-0 Soo. At 3:47 a shot from the left point by Brandon Biggers was deflected low glove side on David Davenport, who had no chance to correct and it was 2-0 Soo after two periods of play. Our Attack started period three with some good effort by the line of Matt Carter, Joshua Domingues and Joey Hishon. Hishon, our Attack 1st round priority draft selection this year, scored his 1st Ontario Hockey League goal at 1:37 from Carter and Domingues. Joshua had set up Matt in the slot for a good wrist shot at Gajewski. Joey was there to snap the rebound behind Kyle. Fans will have fun watching this Hishon boy develop. Already some similarities to Alumnus Brad Richardson are being mentioned. Remember Brad’s first season 2001-2002? The last time our Attack didn’t make the playoffs? The underage was the Attack M.V.P. and after more M.V.P. seasons and a stellar OHL career, will be enjoying his second full season with the Colorado Avalanche this year. Unfortunately, the Greyhounds were allowed to take a two goal lead once again at 2:23. Davenport made a good glove hand save from the left side, but the force of the shot allowed the puck to bounce out of his glove and back toward traffic from where the shot had come. No Attacker was able to get to Jake Carrick before he popped it into the empty Attack net unassisted. An Attack defender miscue while trying to clear the puck from the front of his net gave Matthew Lyall an easy scoring chance and his unassisted PP goal made it a 4-1 game. Caoch Reeds has made it clear that his team will compete till the end. He will not accept anything less. With 31 seconds left in regulation time, Ondrej Pekarik scored his 1st OHL goal backhanding a Mark Pawlowski rebound behind Gajewski. Jordan Davis was also given an assist. Our Attack had come up short by a score of 4-2 with none of the goals against them being anything special. Mark Pawlowski was not excited about the late goal that he created. He left the ice in disgust. Good to see. Mark, like his coach, will not be accepting losing lightly. On the other side of the ice, one would think that Coach Hartsburg wi |
